Author’s Notes 20

Why do this? The reason remains the same from the day I started writing it:

I do not know. But I do believe there is a message waiting to be heard.

In search of that which is truthfully beautiful, the discontent in my heart grew, and grew impatient. Questions needed answers: Had our lives been revolving around the superficial? How can someone be so physically  attractive and yet so repugnant in the inside? Maybe I’ve read too many lifestlye articles, watched countless soap and shampoo advertisements, distracted (and almost hit another car!) because of a towering billboard with some giant lady in the hi-way, seen endless t.v. shows showing half-naked stars…that I’ve forgotten about where beauty truly counts. Maybe we all have.

So the pursuit began in an all-men Bible study with one of the biggest issues that make guys crazy: beautiful women. And the best place to find answers? God’s word, of course. While the themes in the musicale are woman-centric, the script is actually written with men in mind. We who are fascinated by beauty. We who covet it. We who spend for it.  We who sometimes terrifyingly take it by force.

And so Beauty and The Bible was born. The title? Corny and catchy, I know, but I kind of like it that way. Reading and re-reading the Bible, I bought so many Christian literature about women. I never knew how emotional women writers get! It was an informative and amusing perspective. I will, perhaps, never do it again. Haha.

Now I’ve written so much music through the years but I’m no theater guy and the stage remains an uncommon avenue for creativity. Just think of this as a concert with a little bit of dramatization. These testimonies, after all, are merely re-imaginings of often told Bible stories.

So here’s 2 years of research in the form of 7 testimonies and 7 songs. Aside from studying all these beautiful women of the Old Testament, I would also like to thank all the real Sarahs, Rebekahs, Rachels, Esthers, Abigails, Tamars and Daughters of Job who boldly shared their lives to me. It is my hope that their stories will touch many hearts as they have done so with mine. The search for true beauty has been inspiring. Please allow me to share what I’ve found.

Teri Tolosa, this one’s for you.

hey reev! so i remember asking jessica earlier (bought tickets from her) what the story was behind writing the story - and so i found my answer here. I actually like the title - IT, and the subtitle initially caught my attention. That, and the fact that I’ve been looking for a good theater event.

I now have to spread the word!
